Soft or uneven ground
Rural gardens can be soft in winter or uneven where old paths and beds were. We dig footings to firm ground and set posts on them, so the deck stays level as the seasons change.
Facing the view
If the best view is over a hedge or across a field, a little height can make all the difference. We'll stand with you in the garden and work out where the deck should go and how high.
Railings
Any drop over 600mm needs guarding. Timber, rope or glass can suit different settings.
Planning and privacy
Decking is usually permitted development only if no part is more than 30cm above the ground. Raised decks usually need planning permission. Osmotherley and nearby villages are in the North York Moors National Park, where rules can be stricter. We'll advise.
Steps down to the garden
A raised deck needs a comfortable way down to the lawn. Wide, shallow steps feel generous and can double as seating.
What's underneath
The space below a raised deck can store garden tools or logs if we add skirting with an access panel. We'll leave gaps for airflow so the frame stays dry.
Questions people ask
Can you build a raised deck on soft ground?
Yes, with deeper footings to firm ground. We'll check at the visit.
Will we need planning permission?
Probably, if the deck is more than 30cm above the ground. We'll help with drawings.
